Marek Benda was born in Prague, Czech Republic on May 21st, 1989. Marek grew up just outside of Prague with his mother (Dana) and father.
Marek’s hockey career is extensive. Benda participated in the Czech U18 and U20 National programs before trying his hand at Canadian Major Junior Hockey with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Marek appeared in 32 games with the Eagles in 2007-08, posting a modest goals against average and save percentage before being traded to the Baie Comeau Drakkar the following season.
Benda played 35 games with the Drakkar before returning to his native homeland to play professionally. Benda played 4 seasons of European professional hockey. Benda’s best professional season came in 2011-12 with HC Most (Czech2), where he posted a 3.53 GAA and sparkling .917 SV% in 33 games. In 2013, Marek decided to return to Canada to pursue educational opportunities at the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). While being enrolled in the International Business program at MUN, Benda was recommended to Xtreme Hockey by staff member Peggy Wakeham.
Since 2013, Benda has been the head goaltender instructor at Xtreme and has done a fantastic job. Marek’s strong interpersonal skills, business background, hockey-playing talent and coaching ability have made him one of the most well-liked and respected coaches in the province.
When Benda is not focusing on his studies and helping goalies reach their maximum potential on the ice, Marek enjoys reading, hiking, technology, listening to music, and relaxing with his long-time girlfriend.
