The NL Republic travel program has been a huge success so far. The 2006's kicked off the Spring season at the end of April with a visit to Bud the Spud on the bright red rock (PEI) and went 3-1 in round robin play. Unfortunately, the club ran into the 2016 (and soon-to-be 2017) tournament champ NS Royals in the semis and were dispatched by a score of 5-1. Special thanks to Andrews Hockey for putting off a fantastic tournament that featured top quality AAA Elite hockey! We will be back!
The 2004, 2007 and 2009 entries headed to Toronto the following weekend, and were very successful at the Can Lan May Madness tournament. The 2004's won the Non-Contact Division, defeating Speed Hockey 3-1 in the finals. As the old adage goes; 'you often lose to the team who you beat in the round robin', and this could not have been more true for the NL Republic this year (Speed defeated the Republic 5-3 in round robin play).
The 2007's Cinderella playoff run put them on top of the Tier-III division, upsetting Speed Hockey and the undefeated Jr Titans in back-to-back elimination games. The finals was a crazy affair that saw a two-goal swing, some aggressive play, and a huge goal by Will Grant with 1:02 to play in regulation.
The 2009's had a very successful weekend on and off the ice as well, but fell short in the semi-finals at the hands of The Lightning. The 2009's were no strangers to close games in this tournament, as 4 of their 5 tournament games had margins of 2 goals or less. The 2009 group has a lot of talent to build around, and will be a force over the next couple of years if they continue to develop!
This past weekend saw the 2005 and 2008 squads travel the 1,500+ miles to the Big Smoke to play in the Can Lan Quest for the Cup tournament. The 2005's cruised through the round robin and elimination round of the tournament before dueling with PS101 in the finals. The final contest featured a solid team effort across the board in a 4-0 blanking of PS101; congrats to all involved!
The 2008s opened the tournament with a 2-0 mark, but went 1-1 on Saturday to slide to 4th place in the Tier-I division heading into Sunday. The Sabbath Day success continued for the NL Republic, as the 2008s knocked off the top-seeded Regional Express in the semis (3-1 score) and the Northern Eagles (3-2 final) in the Championship match.
A special thank you to all of the managers and coaches of the travel teams! Without you guys, the Xtreme NL Republic travel program does not go as smoothly. Shannon Goodyear, Lorne Walsh (04); Trina Roche, Chris Ryan (05); Kim Quinlan, Neil Cleary, Scott Knight (06); Sharon Ryan, Marc Cullen, Jeremy Kavanagh (07); Denise Fleet, Steve Hodder, Paul Crane (08); and Neil Cleary, Steve Kavanagh (09); - you guys were all fantastic! Thank you from myself and Xtreme Hockey.
The Spring Travel Program wraps up in the Nations Capital May 25-28, as the 2004-05 females hit the road in hopes of winning the Bell Little Sens Tournament. The female squad has looked good in recent practices, and should be very competitive in Ottawa. Good luck to all players!
In honour of the success of the travel program, X Hockey has put off an NL Republic clothing sale! Limited time offer - all hoodies are $40, all toques are $20, and all pants are $40! Contact email@example.com for more details!
