2019-20 Power Skating Groupings Explained

Silver Beginner/Squirt

This group is for pure beginners, and players born in 2015, 2014, and 2013. This group focuses on having fun, balance, basic skating techniques, and very basic puck skills. All hockey equipment is required; jock, shin pads, hockey socks, hockey pants, skates, shoulder pads, elbow pads, neck guard, jersey, helmet with cage, gloves, and stick. Don't have a jersey? Silver Novice

This group is for players born in 2012 and 2011, who will not play Novice Select hockey in 2019-20. This group focuses on the fundamental skills of skating, shooting, passing, and stickhandling. There are two Silver Novice groups - neither group is stronger or weaker than the other. The offering has two slots for convenience purposes - neither group is stronger than the other.

Silver Atom/Peewee

This group is for players born in 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007 birthyears (we sub-divide the ice to group the kids more effectively). Players in this group play Atom and Peewee hockey, mostly at the Atom and Peewee B level and below. Skills that are focused on in this grouping: foundation puckhandling, agility, quickness, stride extension, pivoting, and crossing over.


This group is for players who are looking to work on the fundamentals of playing 'D'. All skill levels are welcome! We focus on backward skating, pivoting, C cuts, explosive starts, and basic in-game defensive concepts (with and without pucks) in this grouping.

We have two (2) defence groups; Group #1 (Silver) is for players born in 2009, and 2010 (Atom). Group #2 (Platinum) is for players born in 2007, and 2008 (Peewee). There is may a couple of 2006's in this group as well.

* There may be a few 2011 birthyears in the Atom group (Group 1). However, we strongly encourage Novice-aged players to do either the Silver Novice or Platinum Novice groupings *

Platinum Novice

This group is for players born in 2012, and 2011 who are Novice Select-calibre skaters and goaltenders. Players who have a very strong chance at making their respective Novice Select team should consider this program. If you are unsure if this program is right for you, please contact ap@xhockey.ca . Skills taught in this program are: explosive stops and starts, advanced puckhandling, shooting, pivoting, and one-leg balance drills.

Platinum Atom

This grouping is for All Star 2009's and 2010's who are playing Atom AA/A in the DJHL, as well as a sprinkling of Atom B players.

Platinum Peewee

This grouping is for All Star 2007's, and 2008's who are playing Peewee AA/A Hockey in the DJHL. The skills and drills for this group will be virtually identical to that of the Platinum Atom group, with some minor tweaks.

Platinum Bantam I

This grouping is for 2006-born Bantam-aged players and goalies

Platinum Bantam II/Midget

This grouping is for 2005 and 2004 players and goalies. You may see some 2006 players in this grouping***


We are very excited to follow up on a successful year in 2018-19! Female-only power skating is open to any female looking to improve their individual skills (skating, puckhandling, shooting, some passing but mostly skating). We will have two (2) Female groups in 2019-20; Group 1 (Silver) will be for females born in 2008 and younger, while Group 2 (Platinum) will be for players born in 2007 or older.
